The MCVSD Winter Workshop is built around the exact structure of the entrance exam. Students begin with a full-length diagnostic mock, then work through targeted ELA and Math instruction paired with timed problem sets that mirror real test conditions.

A second mock exam after the instructional sessions shows measurable progress, and a final review session breaks down the results question by question — with enriched support and Q&A throughout. Every session is held in person at Foley Prep: Bell Works.

How the Workshop Runs

Diagnose

Students take a full-length mock exam (Sat 12/27 or Sun 12/28) to establish a baseline before instruction begins.

Instruct & Practice

Four sessions of targeted ELA and Math review with timed problem sets and enriched support across 12/29–1/2.

Retest & Review

A second mock exam (Sat 1/3 or Sun 1/4) followed by a full mock review session on Mon 1/5 to lock in the gains.

Session 2 — Intensive Instruction & Practice · Tues 12/30, 10:30 am–4:00 pm
  • 10:30 am – 12:00 pm — ELA Instructional Review (reading comprehension focus): approaching narrative, informational, and poetry passages; annotation techniques; common passage structures; literary devices; and testing strategies.
  • 12:00 pm – 12:30 pm — ELA Problem Set (30–35 questions, half a mock test, timed)
  • 12:30 pm – 1:00 pm — Break
  • 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm — Math Instructional Review (pre-algebra essentials + core algebra): order of operations; word problems; exponents & square roots; percentages; proportions; inequalities; one-step equations; linear equations; systems of equations; multi-step equations.
  • 2:30 pm – 3:00 pm — MCVSD Math Problem Set (20 questions)
  • 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm — Enriched Support / Independent Review / Q&A: ask questions on missed problems, request extra drills, or review problem sets independently or in a small group.
Session 3 — Intensive Instruction & Practice · Fri 1/2, 10:30 am–4:00 pm
  • 10:30 am – 12:00 pm — ELA Instructional Review (grammar + organization focus): punctuation; subject-verb agreement; transition words; homophones; sentence order; relevance; spelling.
  • 12:00 pm – 12:30 pm — ELA Problem Set (30–35 questions, half a mock test, timed)
  • 12:30 pm – 1:00 pm — Break
  • 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm — Math Instructional Review (geometry + statistics): area & perimeter (circles/triangles/rectangles/trapezoids/polygons); angle relationships; volume; surface area; Pythagorean theorem; probability; one-variable statistics; data displays.
  • 2:30 pm – 3:00 pm — MCVSD Math Problem Set (20 questions)
  • 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm — Enriched Support / Independent Review / Q&A

Where and when is the MCVSD Winter Workshop held?
The workshop is held at Foley Prep: Bell Works over winter break. It runs from the first mock exam on Sat 12/27 or Sun 12/28 through Session 4 on Mon 1/5, with two mock exams and four instructional sessions in between.
What subjects does the workshop cover?
The workshop targets both sections of the MCVSD exam — ELA and Math. ELA review covers reading comprehension, grammar, and organization; Math review covers pre-algebra essentials, core algebra, geometry, and statistics.
How many mock exams are included?
Two full-length mock exams are included: a pre-program diagnostic (Sat 12/27 or Sun 12/28) and a post-instruction assessment (Sat 1/3 or Sun 1/4). All students take the same version of each test.
How much timed practice is built into the program?
Each intensive session (Session 2 and Session 3) includes a timed ELA problem set of 30–35 questions — about half a mock test — plus a 20-question MCVSD Math problem set, all under realistic test conditions.
What is enriched support?
Enriched support is dedicated time to ask questions on missed problems, request extra drills, and review problem sets independently or in a small group. It is built into Sessions 2, 3, and 4.
