Are you exploring homeschooling options for this fall?
Dear Foley Prep Family,
Please accept this email as an invitation to be part of the conversations I’ve been having with the parents that I’m closest to. Many are understandably very uncertain about what’s next for their children as K-12 schools consider a range of possibilities for this fall. While most parents have no choice but to accept what comes, the more proactive parents I'm talking to are considering different approaches. The educational gap and future fallout that will be created by the pandemic create concerns around keeping high achieving children on track, getting other children back on track, or simply planning to make the most of changing family locations and lifestyles as the situation evolves.
To a great degree, parents I’ve been talking to are considering three different approaches to homeschooling:
Joining the small, but strong, community of parents that help each other homeschool their children.
Contracting with Foley Prep teachers who are K-12 certified in New Jersey and working through an accredited online high school. Foley Prep tutors can meet online or in one of our 7 small, comfortable learning environments in New Jersey. The benefit of working with our team is to ensure your child is actually learning the material and will smoothly re-enter their district or private schools at appropriate grade levels. The advantage of Foley Prep is that we can meet comfortably in person at one of our locations or online - whichever is more convenient along the way.
Forming a “trust circle” or “trust bubble” - you name it - in which a small cohort of friends meets with NJ K-12 certified Foley Prep teachers, either online or in person. A slightly scaled-up version of individual homeschooling, families, together with Foley Prep, will agree to an accredited online high school, ensuring that their cohort of students can re-enter public high school easily in spring or fall 2021.
In addition to helping you solve the academic homeschooling puzzle, Foley Prep will add non-academic components to create a richer, more connected experience for students next year. There are several types of experiential activities I am actively considering - these can be individual or involve cohorts of about 30 Foley Prep students in each region: 30 in South Jersey, 30 in Central/Coastal Jersey, and 30 in North Jersey, all of whom will be working on meeting their individual and common goals toward self-development in a healthy, positive social setting.
As I said above, I’m writing to open up the conversations I’ve been having to those who are interested in exploring these types of possibilities in the coming weeks. The landscape is changing rapidly, and while we can make solid plans on a number of tried-and-true Foley Prep summer programs (test prep, admissions services, academic enrichment), the homeschooling conversations are often speculative. So, please reach out to me (just reply to this email) to set up a time when I can find out what’s on your mind and share what’s on mine.
Foley Prep has an amazing core of full-time, credentialed faculty and seven welcoming, social-distancing-compliant facilities that we plan to reopen in early June. These days, I’m drawing on many aspects of my lifetime of success guiding thousands of clients, friends, and family members in my roles as an education entrepreneur, teacher of math at Watchung Hills High School, college administrator, and tenured professor of mathematics for 15 years.
Thanks, as always, for your time. I hope you are already getting some fun and relaxation in this weekend. I’m in Colorado until June 5th taking my peak Peloton-fueled fitness out on the road to do some very familiar rides in the mountains for 3-4 hours every morning (yesterday I did the 5-mile climb up Mt. Flagstaff - see pic below). As I write this, it’s early morning in Colorado, and my squad is just waking up - we’re embarking on the popular “Jamestown” ride in about an hour. As always, I’m on the phone with parents when I’m not tutoring or helping students on college admissions. So, please don’t hesitate to drop me a line - just reply to this email and we can set up a time to chat. I promise that the conversation will be light and informative 🙂

Catching my breath at a rest stop on my way to the top of Mt. Flagstaff on Friday, May 22nd. It’s a pure 5 mile climb up 2,000 feet with grueling 11% gradients. 4/5 difficulty rating. I’m out riding these familiar rides for the next two weeks until New Jersey opens up.
